Check your test date
How it works
- You take the test at a test centre, usually a Volkshochschule.
- The answer sheets go to BAMF in Nuremberg, where all tests are marked centrally.
- BAMF marks tests in order of the test date. It publishes up to which exam date it has got to - the date above.
- Your result arrives by post. If you passed, you get the certificate you need for your citizenship application.
Right now the gap between the test day and marking is about 12 weeks. It changes during the year, often growing after busy test periods.
While you wait
You can usually submit your citizenship application already and send the certificate later. Haven’t taken the test yet? Take a mock exam to make sure you pass first time - a retake means another fee and another wait.
Questions about results
When will I get my Einbürgerungstest result?
BAMF marks all tests centrally in Nuremberg. As of 21 October 2026, it is marking tests taken up to 31 July 2026. Tests taken after that date are still waiting. After marking, the result is sent by post, which usually takes another one to three weeks.
Can I check my Einbürgerungstest result online?
No. There is no online lookup for individual results. BAMF only publishes up to which test date it is currently marking. Your result and certificate arrive by post.
How long does it take to get the Einbürgerungstest certificate?
It depends on BAMF’s backlog. Right now the backlog is about 12 weeks between the test day and marking, plus postal delivery. Enter your test date on this page for an estimate.
My test date has passed the marking date but I have no letter. What should I do?
Wait two to three weeks after BAMF’s marking date passes your test date, to allow for printing and post. If nothing arrives, contact the test centre where you took the test, or the BAMF citizen service. Have your test date and test centre ready.
Do I need the certificate before I apply for citizenship?
Many naturalisation authorities accept the application first and let you send the certificate later. Ask your local Einbürgerungsbehörde.
