Frequently asked questions
How many questions are in the Einbürgerungstest and how many do I need to pass?
The test has 33 multiple-choice questions: 30 general questions and 3 about your federal state. You need at least 17 correct answers to pass. You have 60 minutes.
How many questions do I need to learn?
The official catalogue has 300 general questions plus 10 questions for each of the 16 federal states. You only need the 300 general questions and the 10 for the state where you live - 310 in total.
Can I take the Einbürgerungstest in English?
No. The test is only offered in German. You can still prepare in English: learn the meaning of each question in English, then practise recognising the German wording, which is what our DE+EN mode is for.
How much does the Einbürgerungstest cost?
The test fee is 25 euros. You pay it when you register at a test centre, usually a Volkshochschule (adult education centre).
Is the Einbürgerungstest the same as the “Leben in Deutschland” test?
Both use the same question catalogue and the same 33-question format. In the “Leben in Deutschland” test at the end of the integration course, 15 correct answers pass the orientation course, while 17 correct answers also count as proof of knowledge for naturalisation.
How long should I study?
Most people need one to three weeks of short daily practice. A good sign that you are ready: you answer about 90% of your 310 questions correctly and pass mock exams with 28 or more points.
Is the Einbürgerungstest difficult?
No - the official statistics show that the vast majority of candidates pass. All questions come from the published catalogue, so with preparation the test is very manageable.
Can I take the test before I apply for citizenship?
Yes. Many people take the test first and include the certificate with their application.
Do I get the questions in random order?
Yes. The 33 questions are a random selection from the catalogue: 30 general questions and 3 from your federal state.
Can I take the test at any Volkshochschule?
Usually you can register at any authorised test centre. Some cities let you choose any VHS regardless of your district. Remember that the 3 state questions depend on where you live.
How long does it take to get the result?
Typically a few weeks. BAMF marks all tests centrally in Nuremberg and sends the certificate by post.
Can I become German after 3 years?
Not anymore. The 3-year fast track was abolished on 30 October 2025. The minimum residence period is now 5 years for everyone.
Can I keep my current passport?
Germany allows dual citizenship since 27 June 2024. Whether you can keep your current citizenship depends on your home country’s law.
How much does German citizenship cost?
The naturalisation fee is €255 per adult and usually €51 per child naturalised with a parent. The Einbürgerungstest costs another €25, and you also pay for your B1 language exam.
Do I need to learn the questions for other states?
No. You only get questions for the federal state where you live (your registered address). Learn the 300 general questions plus your state’s 10.
Is this site official?
No. It is an independent, free learning aid. The questions come from the official BAMF catalogue; translations and explanations are our own.
