Article 20 of the Basic Law says: Germany is a democratic and social federal state. 'Democratic' means the people choose their representatives, 'social' means the state supports people in need, and 'federal' means power is shared between the federation and the 16 states.

Artikel 20 Grundgesetz sagt: Die Bundesrepublik Deutschland ist ein demokratischer und sozialer Bundesstaat. Demokratisch heißt, das Volk wählt. Sozial heißt, der Staat hilft Menschen in Not. Bundesstaat heißt, Bund und Länder teilen sich die Macht.
