Question 1

Welches Wappen gehört zum Bundesland Hessen? (Which coat of arms belongs to the state of Hesse?)

Accepted Answer

Option A. The correct picture is the official answer given. Hesse's coat of arms shows a lion with red and white stripes on a blue shield, with a golden crown (the 'people's crown') above the shield. Thuringia's lion looks similar, but Thuringia's shield also has eight silver stars.

Question 2

Welches ist ein Landkreis in Hessen? (Which of these is a district in Hesse?)

Accepted Answer

Main-Taunus-Kreis (Main-Taunus-Kreis). The Main-Taunus-Kreis, near Frankfurt am Main, is a district (Landkreis) in Hesse. The other names belong to other states: Ammerland is in Lower Saxony, Altötting in Bavaria and Prignitz in Brandenburg. Learn at least one district of your own state for the exam.

Question 3

Für wie viele Jahre wird der Landtag in Hessen gewählt? (For how many years is the state parliament in Hesse elected?)

Accepted Answer

Option C. The state parliament (Landtag) of Hesse is elected every 5 years. Most German states use a 5-year term today; only a few (for example Bremen) still elect every 4 years. The German Bundestag, by contrast, is elected every 4 years.

Question 4

Ab welchem Alter darf man in Hessen bei Kommunalwahlen wählen? (From what age are people allowed to vote in local elections in Hesse?)

Accepted Answer

18 (18). In Hesse, you may vote in local elections (for municipal councils, district councils and mayors) from the age of 18. Some other states allow voting from 16, but Hesse has kept 18 for local elections. So the exam answer for Hesse is 18.

Question 5

Welche Farben hat die Landesflagge von Hessen? (What colors are on the state flag of Hesse?)

Accepted Answer

rot-weiß (red-white). The state flag of Hesse is red and white (red stripe on top, white below). These colours come from the red-and-white striped lion in the Hessian coat of arms. Black-gold and green-white-red belong to other states (Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia).

Question 6

Wo können Sie sich in Hessen über politische Themen informieren? (Where can you find information about political issues in Hesse?)

Accepted Answer

bei der Landeszentrale für politische Bildung (at the State Center for Civic Education). The Landeszentrale für politische Bildung in Hesse offers neutral information on politics, democracy and history: brochures, books, events and websites, mostly free of charge. The consumer advice centre helps with shopping and contracts, the regulatory office (Ordnungsamt) deals with public order, and churches are religious communities, not political information services.

Question 7

Die Landeshauptstadt von Hessen heißt … (The state capital of Hesse is...)

Accepted Answer

Wiesbaden. (Wiesbaden). The capital of Hesse is Wiesbaden; the state parliament (Landtag) and state government are based there. Frankfurt am Main is Hesse's largest city and a financial centre, but it is not the capital. Kassel and Darmstadt are other important Hessian cities.

Question 8

Welches Bundesland ist Hessen? (Which federal state is Hesse?)

Accepted Answer

Option C. The correct map is the official answer given. Hesse lies in the centre-west of Germany, around the cities of Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Kassel. It has no border with another country. When you study the maps, look at the position of the state within Germany and its neighbours.

Question 9

Wie nennt man die Regierungschefin/den Regierungschef in Hessen? (What is the head of government in Hesse called?)

Accepted Answer

Ministerpräsidentin/Ministerpräsident (Minister-President). In Hesse, as in all German territorial states (Flächenländer), the head of the state government is called Ministerpräsidentin or Ministerpräsident (Minister-President). The Landtag elects this person. Titles like 'Mayor' are used for city heads or in the city-states, and 'Prime Minister' or 'First Minister' are not German titles.

Question 10

Welche Ministerin/welchen Minister hat Hessen nicht? (Which minister does Hesse not have?)

Accepted Answer

Außenministerin/Außenminister (Minister of Foreign Affairs). Hesse has its own state government with ministers for areas such as justice, finance and the interior. Foreign policy, however, is a federal matter under the Basic Law (Article 32), so only the federal government in Berlin has a Foreign Minister. Therefore Hesse has no Minister of Foreign Affairs.
