Question 1

Welches Wappen gehört zum Bundesland Saarland? (Which coat of arms belongs to the state of Saarland?)

Accepted Answer

Option D. The correct picture is the official answer given. Saarland's coat of arms is divided into four parts. Each part recalls a historic territory of the region, among them Saarbrücken, Lorraine, the Electorate of Trier (red cross) and Pfalz-Zweibrücken (lion).

Question 2

Welches ist ein Landkreis im Saarland? (Which of these is a district in Saarland?)

Accepted Answer

Neunkirchen (Neunkirchen). Neunkirchen is a district (Landkreis) in Saarland. The other names belong to other states: Mecklenburgische Seenplatte is in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Altötting in Bavaria and Rhein-Sieg-Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia. Learn at least one district of your own state for the exam.

Question 3

Für wie viele Jahre wird der Landtag des Saarlandes gewählt? (For how many years is the state parliament of Saarland elected?)

Accepted Answer

Option C. The state parliament (Landtag) of Saarland is elected every 5 years. Most German states use a 5-year term today; only a few (for example Bremen) still elect every 4 years. The German Bundestag, by contrast, is elected every 4 years.

Question 4

Ab welchem Alter darf man im Saarland bei Kommunalwahlen wählen? (At what age are you allowed to vote in local elections in Saarland?)

Accepted Answer

18 (18). In Saarland, you may vote in local elections (for municipal councils, district councils and mayors) from the age of 18. Some other states allow voting from 16, but Saarland has kept 18 for local elections. So the exam answer for Saarland is 18.

Question 5

Welche Farben hat die Landesflagge des Saarlandes? (What are the colors of the state flag of Saarland?)

Accepted Answer

schwarz-rot-gold (black-red-gold). The state flag of Saarland is black-red-gold, the German national colours, with the Saarland coat of arms in the middle. Saarland only joined the Federal Republic in 1957 and chose the German colours for its flag.

Question 6

Wo können Sie sich im Saarland über politische Themen informieren? (Where can you find information on political topics in Saarland?)

Accepted Answer

bei der Landeszentrale für politische Bildung (from the State Agency for Civic Education). The Landeszentrale für politische Bildung in Saarland offers neutral information on politics, democracy and history: brochures, books, events and websites, mostly free of charge. The consumer advice centre helps with shopping and contracts, the regulatory office (Ordnungsamt) deals with public order, and churches are religious communities, not political information services.

Question 7

Die Landeshauptstadt des Saarlandes heißt … (The state capital of Saarland is...)

Accepted Answer

Saarbrücken. (Saarbrücken.). The capital of Saarland is Saarbrücken, on the river Saar, where the Landtag and the state government are based. Neunkirchen, Homburg and Völklingen are other towns in Saarland but not the capital. The city's name comes from the river Saar.

Question 8

Welches Bundesland ist das Saarland? (Which federal state is Saarland?)

Accepted Answer

Option B. The correct map is the official answer given. Saarland is the smallest territorial state, located in the south-west of Germany. It borders France and Luxembourg and, within Germany, only Rhineland-Palatinate. When you study the maps, look at the position of the state within Germany and its neighbours.

Question 9

Wie nennt man die Regierungschefin/den Regierungschef des Saarlandes? (What is the title of the head of government of Saarland?)

Accepted Answer

Ministerpräsidentin/Ministerpräsident (Minister-President). In Saarland, as in all German territorial states (Flächenländer), the head of the state government is called Ministerpräsidentin or Ministerpräsident (Minister-President). The Landtag elects this person. Titles like 'Mayor' are used for city heads or in the city-states, and 'Prime Minister' or 'First Minister' are not German titles.

Question 10

Welche Ministerin/welchen Minister hat das Saarland nicht? (Which of the following ministers does Saarland not have?)

Accepted Answer

Außenministerin/Außenminister (Minister of Foreign Affairs). Saarland has its own state government with ministers for areas such as justice, finance and the interior. Foreign policy, however, is a federal matter under the Basic Law (Article 32), so only the federal government in Berlin has a Foreign Minister. Therefore Saarland has no Minister of Foreign Affairs.
