Question 1

Welches Wappen gehört zum Bundesland Rheinland-Pfalz? (Which coat of arms belongs to the state of Rhineland-Palatinate?)

Accepted Answer

Option A. The correct picture is the official answer given. Rhineland-Palatinate's coat of arms has three fields for historic territories: a red cross for Trier, a white wheel for Mainz and a golden lion for the Palatinate (Pfalz). Above the shield there is a crown of leaves (the 'people's crown').

Question 2

Welches ist ein Landkreis in Rheinland-Pfalz? (Which of these is a district (Landkreis) in Rhineland-Palatinate?)

Accepted Answer

Westerwaldkreis (Westerwaldkreis). The Westerwaldkreis is a district (Landkreis) in Rhineland-Palatinate. The other names belong to other states: Altötting is in Bavaria, Emsland in Lower Saxony and Prignitz in Brandenburg. Learn at least one district of your own state for the exam.

Question 3

Für wie viele Jahre wird der Landtag in Rheinland-Pfalz gewählt? (For how many years is the state parliament (Landtag) in Rhineland-Palatinate elected?)

Accepted Answer

Option C. The state parliament (Landtag) of Rhineland-Palatinate is elected every 5 years. Most German states use a 5-year term today; only a few (for example Bremen) still elect every 4 years. The German Bundestag, by contrast, is elected every 4 years.

Question 4

Ab welchem Alter darf man in Rheinland-Pfalz bei Kommunalwahlen wählen? (At what age are you allowed to vote in local elections in Rhineland-Palatinate?)

Accepted Answer

18 (18). In Rhineland-Palatinate, you may vote in local elections (for municipal councils, district councils and mayors) from the age of 18. Some other states allow voting from 16, but Rhineland-Palatinate has kept 18 for local elections. So the exam answer for Rhineland-Palatinate is 18.

Question 5

Welche Farben hat die Landesflagge von Rheinland-Pfalz? (What are the colors of the state flag of Rhineland-Palatinate?)

Accepted Answer

schwarz-rot-gold (black-red-gold). The state flag of Rhineland-Palatinate is black-red-gold, the German national colours, with the state coat of arms in the upper corner near the flagpole. White-red is Hamburg's flag and green-white-red is North Rhine-Westphalia's. Several states use black-red-gold with their own coat of arms.

Question 6

Wo können Sie sich in Rheinland-Pfalz über politische Themen informieren? (Where can you find information on political topics in Rhineland-Palatinate?)

Accepted Answer

bei der Landeszentrale für politische Bildung (at the State Center for Civic Education). The Landeszentrale für politische Bildung in Rhineland-Palatinate offers neutral information on politics, democracy and history: brochures, books, events and websites, mostly free of charge. The consumer advice centre helps with shopping and contracts, the regulatory office (Ordnungsamt) deals with public order, and churches are religious communities, not political information services.

Question 7

Die Landeshauptstadt von Rheinland-Pfalz heißt … (The state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate is...)

Accepted Answer

Mainz. (Mainz.). The capital of Rhineland-Palatinate is Mainz, on the Rhine, where the Landtag and the state government are based. Ludwigshafen, Koblenz and Kaiserslautern are other large cities in the state, but none of them is the capital.

Question 8

Welches Bundesland ist Rheinland-Pfalz? (Which state is Rhineland-Palatinate?)

Accepted Answer

Option A. The correct map is the official answer given. Rhineland-Palatinate lies in the south-west of Germany and borders France, Luxembourg and Belgium. When you study the maps, look at the position of the state within Germany and its neighbours.

Question 9

Wie nennt man die Regierungschefin/den Regierungschef in Rheinland-Pfalz? (What is the head of government in Rhineland-Palatinate called?)

Accepted Answer

Ministerpräsidentin/Ministerpräsident (Minister-President). In Rhineland-Palatinate, as in all German territorial states (Flächenländer), the head of the state government is called Ministerpräsidentin or Ministerpräsident (Minister-President). The Landtag elects this person. Titles like 'Mayor' are used for city heads or in the city-states, and 'Prime Minister' or 'First Minister' are not German titles.

Question 10

Welche Ministerin/welchen Minister hat Rheinland-Pfalz nicht? (Which minister does Rhineland-Palatinate not have?)

Accepted Answer

Außenministerin/Außenminister (Minister of Foreign Affairs). Rhineland-Palatinate has its own state government with ministers for areas such as justice, finance and the interior. Foreign policy, however, is a federal matter under the Basic Law (Article 32), so only the federal government in Berlin has a Foreign Minister. Therefore Rhineland-Palatinate has no Minister of Foreign Affairs.
