Question 1

Welches Wappen gehört zum Bundesland Sachsen-Anhalt? (Which coat of arms belongs to the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt?)

Accepted Answer

Option D. The correct picture is the official answer given. Saxony-Anhalt's coat of arms is divided into two parts: the upper part shows the Saxon black and gold stripes with the green crown of rue, the lower part shows the black bear of Anhalt walking on a red wall.

Question 2

Welches ist ein Landkreis in Sachsen-Anhalt? (Which of these is a district (Landkreis) in Saxony-Anhalt?)

Accepted Answer

Börde (Börde). Börde is a district (Landkreis) in Saxony-Anhalt. The other names belong to other states: Ammerland is in Lower Saxony, Altötting in Bavaria and Uckermark in Brandenburg. Learn at least one district of your own state for the exam.

Question 3

Für wie viele Jahre wird der Landtag in Sachsen-Anhalt gewählt? (For how many years is the Landtag (state parliament) in Saxony-Anhalt elected?)

Accepted Answer

Option C. The state parliament (Landtag) of Saxony-Anhalt is elected every 5 years. Most German states use a 5-year term today; only a few (for example Bremen) still elect every 4 years. The German Bundestag, by contrast, is elected every 4 years.

Question 4

Ab welchem Alter darf man in Sachsen-Anhalt bei Kommunalwahlen wählen? (At what age are you allowed to vote in local elections in Saxony-Anhalt?)

Accepted Answer

16 (16). In Saxony-Anhalt, young people may vote in local elections (for town councils, district councils and mayors) from the age of 16. Several German states have lowered the local voting age to 16 so that young people can take part in decisions in their community. In Bundestag elections the voting age is 18.

Question 5

Welche Farben hat die Landesflagge von Sachsen-Anhalt? (What are the colors of the state flag of Saxony-Anhalt?)

Accepted Answer

gelb-schwarz (yellow-black). The state flag of Saxony-Anhalt is yellow and black (yellow on top, black below), usually shown with the state coat of arms. Do not confuse it with Saxony (white-green) or Thuringia (white-red). Memory aid: yellow on top, black at the bottom.

Question 6

Wo können Sie sich in Sachsen-Anhalt über politische Themen informieren? (Where can you find information on political topics in Saxony-Anhalt?)

Accepted Answer

bei der Landeszentrale für politische Bildung (at the State Agency for Civic Education). The Landeszentrale für politische Bildung in Saxony-Anhalt offers neutral information on politics, democracy and history: brochures, books, events and websites, mostly free of charge. The consumer advice centre helps with shopping and contracts, the regulatory office (Ordnungsamt) deals with public order, and churches are religious communities, not political information services.

Question 7

Die Landeshauptstadt von Sachsen-Anhalt heißt … (The state capital of Saxony-Anhalt is...)

Accepted Answer

Magdeburg. (Magdeburg.). The capital of Saxony-Anhalt is Magdeburg, on the river Elbe, where the Landtag and the state government are based. Halle is a similarly large city, Dessau is known for the Bauhaus and Wittenberg for Martin Luther, but none of them is the capital.

Question 8

Welches Bundesland ist Sachsen-Anhalt? (Which federal state is Saxony-Anhalt?)

Accepted Answer

Option C. The correct map is the official answer given. Saxony-Anhalt lies in the middle of eastern Germany, between Lower Saxony, Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia. It has no border with another country. When you study the maps, look at the position of the state within Germany and its neighbours.

Question 9

Wie nennt man die Regierungschefin/den Regierungschef in Sachsen-Anhalt? (What is the head of government in Saxony-Anhalt called?)

Accepted Answer

Ministerpräsidentin/Ministerpräsident (Minister-President). In Saxony-Anhalt, as in all German territorial states (Flächenländer), the head of the state government is called Ministerpräsidentin or Ministerpräsident (Minister-President). The Landtag elects this person. Titles like 'Mayor' are used for city heads or in the city-states, and 'Prime Minister' or 'First Minister' are not German titles.

Question 10

Welche Ministerin/welchen Minister hat Sachsen-Anhalt nicht? (Which minister does Saxony-Anhalt not have?)

Accepted Answer

Außenministerin/Außenminister (Minister of Foreign Affairs). Saxony-Anhalt has its own state government with ministers for areas such as justice, finance and the interior. Foreign policy, however, is a federal matter under the Basic Law (Article 32), so only the federal government in Berlin has a Foreign Minister. Therefore Saxony-Anhalt has no Minister of Foreign Affairs.
