Question 2

Accepted Answer

Nordfriesland (Nordfriesland). Nordfriesland (North Frisia) is a district (Landkreis) in Schleswig-Holstein. The other names belong to other states: Ammerland is in Lower Saxony, Mecklenburgische Seenplatte in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Rhein-Sieg-Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia. Learn at least one district of your own state for the exam.

Question 3

Für wie viele Jahre wird der Landtag in Schleswig-Holstein gewählt? (For how many years is the state parliament in Schleswig-Holstein elected?)

Accepted Answer

Option C. The state parliament (Landtag) of Schleswig-Holstein is elected every 5 years. Most German states use a 5-year term today; only a few (for example Bremen) still elect every 4 years. The German Bundestag, by contrast, is elected every 4 years.

Question 4

Accepted Answer

16 (16). In Schleswig-Holstein, young people may vote in local elections (for town councils, district councils and mayors) from the age of 16. Several German states have lowered the local voting age to 16 so that young people can take part in decisions in their community. In Bundestag elections the voting age is 18.

Question 5

Welche Farben hat die Landesflagge von Schleswig-Holstein? (What are the colors of the state flag of Schleswig-Holstein?)

Accepted Answer

blau-weiß-rot (blue-white-red). The state flag of Schleswig-Holstein is blue-white-red in horizontal stripes. The colours come from the coat of arms: blue from the lions of Schleswig, white and red from Holstein. White-blue is Bavaria and white-red is Thuringia.

Question 6

Wo können Sie sich in Schleswig-Holstein über politische Themen informieren? (Where can you find information about political topics in Schleswig-Holstein?)

Accepted Answer

beim / bei der Landesbeauftragten für politische Bildung (at the State Commissioner for Civic Education). In Schleswig-Holstein, civic education is organised by the State Commissioner for Civic Education (Landesbeauftragte/r für politische Bildung), which is attached to the state parliament. It offers neutral information, publications and events about politics and democracy. Consumer advice centres, regulatory offices and churches have other tasks.

Die Landeshauptstadt von Schleswig-Holstein heißt … (The state capital of Schleswig-Holstein is...)

Accepted Answer

Kiel. (Kiel.). The capital of Schleswig-Holstein is Kiel, on the Baltic Sea, where the Landtag and the state government are based. Lübeck, Flensburg and Husum are other well-known towns in the state, but not the capital. Kiel is famous for the sailing event Kieler Woche.

Question 8

Welches Bundesland ist Schleswig-Holstein? (Which state is Schleswig-Holstein?)

Accepted Answer

Option A. The correct map is the official answer given. Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost German state. It lies between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and borders Denmark. When you study the maps, look at the position of the state within Germany and its neighbours.

Question 9

Wie nennt man die Regierungschefin/den Regierungschef in Schleswig-Holstein? (What is the head of government in Schleswig-Holstein called?)

Accepted Answer

Ministerpräsidentin/Ministerpräsident (Minister-President). In Schleswig-Holstein, as in all German territorial states (Flächenländer), the head of the state government is called Ministerpräsidentin or Ministerpräsident (Minister-President). The Landtag elects this person. Titles like 'Mayor' are used for city heads or in the city-states, and 'Prime Minister' or 'First Minister' are not German titles.

Question 10

Welche Ministerin/welchen Minister hat Schleswig-Holstein nicht? (Which minister does Schleswig-Holstein not have?)

Accepted Answer

Außenministerin/Außenminister (Minister of Foreign Affairs). Schleswig-Holstein has its own state government with ministers for areas such as justice, finance and the interior. Foreign policy, however, is a federal matter under the Basic Law (Article 32), so only the federal government in Berlin has a Foreign Minister. Therefore Schleswig-Holstein has no Minister of Foreign Affairs.
